We have always been open to addressing the issues to the community that may be more forward-focused than where the law is and trying to be creative in terms of applying the law to assist in those kinds of situations – even in situations where you’re talking about legally-created marriages. Within that context you have to be creative and think of new ways to function and new ways to see a problem.

We’re very smart and that’s one of the things that people get. When they have a hard problem, we’re willing to think about it and find a new way. Twenty-five years ago when we started this firm, we were one of the only woman-owned firm in divorce, and we are the only woman-owned prominent divorce firm that has a firm of a sizable nature. We’ve stepped out and fought for certain rights for women that were in the law but weren’t being utilized or pushed forward. Now the next frontier is pushing forward those same rights for same-sex relationships. It’s just an automatic progression. Society moves faster than the law.
