I’m like the guide going down the river. I’ve been down the river 5,685 times; you’ve never been down the river. I can prepare you for the journey. That’s what’s calming – to have a guide. There are going to be rapids. There’s going to be conflict, but most cases settle. Armed with that information, it doesn’t have to be so adversarial. Parts of it do. Breaking up is hard to do. You don’t always smile at each other and shake hands, but you can get through it. You don’t have to get into the adversarial portion of it.  more >

One of Chicago's "30 Toughest Lawyers"
 Chicago Magazine, 2001 >

In a divorce, I consider a case a success when a person is able to leave the marriage with a view toward the future and a plan.  A person leaving a marriage should know that there is another path in life and they do not continue to be filled with anxiety about the future.  Clients are fearful about what change and they cannot envision a new life. I help them understand their financial picture and help them make a plan to manage their future.  Success is obtaining the best result for each client – one that will assure that each person can go forward and have a good life – maybe not the same life, but an opportunity to build a future. more >

The goal of the law, and of lawyers as advocates, should be to assist people in improving their lives.  Having practiced in many different areas of law during my career I came to realize that family law is the practice area where attorneys make the biggest difference in the personal lives of their clients.  It is also the area of law where I can vividly see the product of my work from the beginning of a case to the end and, when it is over, I know that I have helped a client survive a very traumatic situation.  more >

Clients can expect a straight forward and honest approach from me. This is a very confusing and emotional time for people, yet it is important to be well informed and maintain a level head and realize that this emotional experience is a business transaction as well. My goal is to help my clients understand what is going on with their case and how we will work together to best accomplish their goals.   more >

Having experience in the intensive care unit of a hospital and the special education department of a high school, I worked extensively with families at difficult and sensitive times, and know that a dedicated advocate can be crucial at trying moments.  I knew I wanted to continue to have that kind of positive impact on people’s lives, but couldn’t find the niche that would allow me to use my personal and litigation skills in a way that would make that difference.  After taking my first family law class, I knew I had found my place.  more >

Office Manager/Accountant
mls@nottawar.com

As the Office Manager I oversee all internal processes of the office. In the capacity of accounting, I ensure timely and accurate billing to the clients and work closely with them to develop payment plans if necessary and answer any questions or concerns regarding invoicing. Clients can expect honesty, professionalism and knowledge regarding their invoicing. If I need to investigate prior to answering a question, I will ensure a prompt but well researched response. Clients can also expect concern; for them, their families and the life they are beginning.    more >

Paralegal

I’m the hidden force behind the scenes, organizing the paper trail that supports their case. I help draft pleadings. I help organize the client’s documents. Because we’re family law, there are big huge document production – family credit card statements, bank statements, investment records, etc. – going through and organizing them, going through pleadings and organizing them into some kind of working order that’s manageable for the attorneys. Aside from that, I go to court every day and help with any other aspect of the case that they may need my help with.  more >
